Do your arms slowly get heavier while you practice the Aerophone? When you are absorbed in playing, it is easy to tense your arms without noticing.

My arms get tired when I practice at home.
But they don't get as tired in my lessons. Why is that?

For me, arm fatigue turned out to be closely tied to the angle of my chin and where my music stand sits. After a lot of trial and error, one small discovery changed how tired I get.

I started the Aerophone as a complete beginner, with no wind instrument experience at all. Everything in this article comes from my own trial and error.

In this article, I share the posture points that reduce arm fatigue, and how to adjust the height and angle of your music stand.

A little attention in each practice session is enough to make playing more comfortable.

Basic posture points to check

Let's start with your posture when you play sitting down. These six points are the basics for reducing the load on your arms.

Sitting, straps, grip, and thumb position are covered in detail in my posture series — Part 2 is linked above, and Part 1 is at the end of this article. Here I focus on something neither of them covers: how the angle of your chin changes the load on your arms.

  • Sit on the front half of the chair.
  • Keep your back straight, without arching your lower back.
  • Sit as if you are being suspended from the top of your head, like a mascot keychain hanging from a strap.
  • Tuck your chin in slightly, just enough that it does not feel cramped.
  • Hold the Aerophone as if you are gently pushing it forward with both thumbs.
  • Set the top edge of your sheet music at eye level.
Six posture points to check when playing the Aerophone

A slightly downward gaze is just right

When you sit as if you are being suspended from the top of your head, your chin naturally settles into a slightly tucked position.

From there, your gaze does not run parallel to the floor. It points slightly downward. This is a very important point for reducing arm fatigue.

The opposite also happens. If you try to keep your gaze parallel to the floor, your chin lifts a little. A lifted chin increases the load on your arms, so it is worth watching for.

How your gaze and your music stand work together

The best height and angle for your music stand change with the direction of your gaze. Let's compare two patterns, A and B.

A: Gaze parallel to the floor

In A, you keep your gaze parallel to the floor and set the music stand so the top edge of your sheet music is at eye level. At first glance this looks like very good posture.

But in this position your chin lifts a little, so you need extra force to push the Aerophone forward. Your arms get tired more easily as a result.

There is a second problem. When the music stand is close to vertical, your eyes have to travel further up and down. Your arms move up and down with them, and you end up using force you did not intend to use.

B: Tuck your chin and let your gaze point slightly downward

In B, you let your chin tuck in naturally and your gaze point slightly downward. You need less force to push the Aerophone forward than in A.

My arms got tired less easily, and the load on my right thumb went down at the same time. You can feel this change right away when you try it.

Then lower your music stand a little and lay the angle back slightly. Your sheet music sits a little further away, but your eyes travel less, so your arms move up and down less too.

The music felt far away at first, but I got used to it quickly.

Just be careful not to look too far down, or your back will round.

Remember to let go of tension

Even when you are careful about your posture, your body can tense while you concentrate on practicing.

Before I notice it, everything is rigid — shoulders, arms, wrists, all the way to my fingertips.

The harder you practice, the more your shoulders tense, the more your chin lifts, the more force your arms use, and the more tired you get. It is easy to fall into this cycle.

So I take breaks when I need them, and I check my posture often.

Stretching and massaging your arms and hands helps too. In sports and in music, letting go of tension is a lifelong subject. Finding the right amount of force takes time.

The same applies when you play standing

Most of us play sitting down, but the idea is the same when you play standing.

Lower your music stand a little and lay the angle back, and the load on your arms goes down in a standing position too.

Other benefits of lowering your music stand

Adjusting the position of my music stand brought benefits beyond less tired arms.

My music stand used to sit close to my face, which felt too close when I played standing. Lowering it a little opened things up, and I could sense what was happening around me.

When I play alone, I can feel the atmosphere of the room. In an ensemble, I can see what the other members are doing. A wider field of view improves how I play.

Lowering my music stand a little and adjusting its angle made a real difference to the load on my arms. My chin still lifts without my noticing sometimes, but the habit of checking my posture during practice helps.
